About The Artwork

Acrylic, china marker, charcoal from the San Bernardino mountains El Dorado fire (2020), desert plains grass, and raw desert rose selenite on wood panel w. 1.5" cradle. Each panel is 24 x 24 and mounted with picture wire. Out of the ash, a new life is emerging. Within a single cell holds the potential for all that is to come from within its capsuled complexity. This primal process is depicted through a triptych, from conceptus to zygote. A fleeting moment when all components of creation are housed within a single cell. The information that will inform all from which you came, waits patiently. This tiny miracle comes through all the darkness, journey, and odds that may have been stacked against it, but here you are. From ash to ash, dust from dust. In biological terms, the conceptus (part 1) is where there is a creation of two nuclei preceding the initial dividing of the conceptus. Meaning, this is right after the egg has been fertilized, but yet to divide into the double-celled zygote. Once I completed the conceptus, I knew it had to become a series. It came very naturally from there to create a double and then a four cell zygote. For me, this series symbolizes new beginnings and birthing/rebirthing of all kinds, in a circular fashion. Sometimes a part of us has to pass on in order for a new, better version of ourselves to emerge from that ash. This piece is meaningful for honoring life transitions of all kinds. A single cell is a circle, the ultimate symbol of cycles, reminding us we are always shifting and evolving. The circle is also a symbol of unity. As our world has become so bitterly divided, this offering seeks to illuminate and remind us of our common ground. We are all subject to greater planetary and human life cycles, cut from the same cloth. The way forward is where we see we our commonality.

My ongoing body of work stems from observations of our internal and external environment, and explorations of embodiment and energy process. The result seeks to remind us of our origin as a product of the natural world, of beginnings as a single cell, and to expand our awareness of ever evolving cycles, both innate and conscious. One day while gardening, I was trimming a vine that notoriously crowds many of the other plants. Its fine, sprawling, many-branched backbone stopped me cold, and I stared with great wonder. The form and patterns matched the delicately complex bodies of the neurons I had been pouring over in many books during my studies of neuroscience and physiology. A creative impulse charged through me, and without really understanding what I was doing, I began creating something from these vines and weeds, which I now saw as neurons scattered about my yard. From there came the development of my own symbolic language of various plants and minerals as cellular structures. The structural similarity is where it all started. However, a larger metaphor emerged as I worked through the selection of materials and the process of composition. There was a story that told of life cycles: of birth and death, growth and decay; of joy and loss, injury and healing. All of these things were in process. I saw pieces of my own story reflected back. I felt the movement. I witnessed the transformation. I now feel more like a translator of the work than a creator of it. My Sound Meditation practice has woven its way into my creative process, which I feel allows me to open into a more visionary space. I invite the viewer to find their own meaningful connection through this work, and explore the relationship between our internal and external worlds.
