This started with a photographic interest in Hawaiian culture and I found the sacred flower on the slope of an extinct volcano. Although the details of the flower have been obscured, Pele, the Goddess of the Volcano, has given this image her blessing. This is part of an experiment with analog materials and eventually, it has evolved over time to end up a digital print on fine art paper. I call it a hybrid and the process literally took several years, reflecting the transition from analog photography to digital image making, resulting in a painterly quality. I have created two bodies of work with this experiment and I owe credit to a digital lab, Digital Grange, for their help in bringing this work to the gallery. I hope the viewer will see the subject in a new way as a work of art has the ability to transcend the subject itself.

While documenting my travels to Europe, Jamaica, the Hawaiian islands and California, I worked in a busy commercial photo studio constantly honing my technical skills in both subject areas. In the mid 80's, I was ready to apply myself to fine art photography so I applied to the SF Art Institute where I earned honors in color photography while studying with Reagan Louie, https://www.sfai.edu/bios/reagan-louie. During my two years at the Art Institute, I formed a lasting friendship with Chair of the Photo Dept., Jack Fulton, https://www.sfai.edu/bios/jack-fulton, who mentored me and helped curate my undergraduate exhibition. After graduation, I created and managed the Clara Street Studio which became an incubator for collaboration among visual artists and performing artists while providing me a studio for experiments with light and a large space to create photo-collage. During the infancy of digital photography, I married and moved to a remote region of Brazil, where, for nearly eight years, I documented everything around me. I continued shooting with film, creating photo-collage and large scale prints for exhibition, while teaching myself digital photography to share online at itacare.com My return to SF found me working as in-house photographer at a gallery located at 49 Geary Street, home to over a dozen contemporary art galleries. Matt McKinley curated many shows there and exhibited my work from Brazil at several venues around the City. https://www.mckinleyartsolutions.com/home.html A few years passed and I was offered an opportunity I couldn't pass up. I moved to Healdsburg, CA, just over an hour north of the Golden Gate in the heart of wine country, where I could live and work on the Russian River, creating fine art stretcher bars and panels. The John Annesley Company, https://www.johnannesley.com/, serves museums, conservators, galleries and working artists like David Hockney. As an account manager, I brought in new clients including the Smithsonian and the College of Notre Dame. I opened a photo studio in Healdsburg working with artists, entertainers and entrepeneurs as well as the people, the vineyards and the culture behind the wine industry. From there, I moved west to live among the redwoods and photograph the dramatic northern California coast. I recently settled in the town of Sonoma where I am editing the seascapes while printing and mounting those images and others from the archives.
