This is an abstract silhouette of Kobe Bryant done entirely in Lakers purple and gold. As Kobe himself was a storyteller, this piece is meant to signify a story honouring parts of his life and career, rather than just one moment in time. The image itself starts at the beginning, representing Kobe’s early years with his retro number 8 Lakers jersey, his memorable hair and Crazy 8 (KB8) Adidas shoes. Inside the silhouette’s details, the viewer can find little representations throughout. On Kobe’s arm, an outline of Italy can be found depicting the love he had for this country since childhood. Just below, there is a “24” incorporating both of his iconic retired jerseys. His shooting arm leading towards his hand displays the outline of a black mamba snake about to attack as he drives the ball forward. Kobe’s daughter Gianna cannot be excluded from this tribute and so her name is engraved into his right leg. On the same leg, the outlines of his shoe represent his 5 NBA Championships and his 2 NBA Finals MVP trophies. On the bottom of his left leg is hidden another esteemed accolade in the outline of an Oscar. This starts the transition from Kobe as a basketball player to his ability to master almost anything he attempted. This leads into the background which depicts specific words and lines from the poem from his screenplay “Dear Basketball” which he used to announce his retirement. The centre of the background displays Kobe the businessman through the formation of his “Mamba” company logo made entirely from genuine snakeskin and accented with gold around the edges. To finish off the background, the bottom right corner displays a gold replica of his autograph from his retirement announcement to end this piece in the same manner he ended his own work of art.

I am a visual artist from Toronto, Canada. With a lifelong love for basketball, I have been able to combine my passion for sports and artistic expression into creating paintings and one of kind art pieces. Experimentation with epoxy resin has opened avenues to exploring and combining mediums and unorthodox practices. I am eager to continue to employ creative methods outside the scope of traditional fine art with the desire to provide my take on the world in a unique way. Every Abriella Sammy piece is one of a kind with most pieces having been commissioned to incorporate the client’s vision from the beginning to completion. To further increase the individuality of these pieces, I have learned how to use many mediums and practices including resin, aerosol, woodworking, acrylics, oils, inks, clay, plaster, fibreglass and gold leafing/gilding. My work has expanded into murals on public buildings, restaurants, offices, sports facilities, locker rooms, etc. With a love and passion for sports, I have partnered and done projects with the NBA, Detroit Pistons, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, Raptors 905, Klay Thompson (NBA), HoopBus, Toronto Blue Jays, Baseball Canada, Mizuno & several F1 and IndyCar events.
