Point of Departure Artwork

I am a British artist, writer and dancer living in southern Spain. I paint in my studio nestled beneath the local mountain, La Concha, with a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea. Dancing ballet and flamenco inspire my love of the human body as a subject for art and the beautiful Mediterranean colours and light are visible in my work. I love to draw from life, always the starting point of my paintings. Recently, I have not only been painting in oils on canvas, but started to explore digital art based on my life drawings. My work is figurative with abstract elements that convey mood and emotion. Sometimes one of my poems becomes expressed as a painting. I’m influenced by the paintings of Matisse and William Blake and the ancient art of Egypt, also by sculpture such as the work of Rodin. I like painting torsos, traditionally a subject for sculpture and the mannequins I saw in Selfridges shop windows became the subject for a very different series of paintings.
