Every February Anna Pappas Gallery invites a collection of artists to exhibit works based on a curatorial theme. Our 2012 program commences with Project 12: This Is Not A Love Song, which features thirteen contemporary artists from Australia and overseas, including New York based Ben Coonley and Brazillian artist Marco Paulo Rolla. We fall in love, we fumble for a pencil. Or a paintbrush. Or a video camera. Through the ages people have grappled with how to express the confusing emotion that is love. Roses are given, names are carved into trees, corny love songs are written. This Is Not A Love Song brings together works by local and international contemporary artists which explore the relationship between romance and popular culture. Some of these artists have never made public any artwork that professes affection, thereby presenting a playful and varied approach to the depiction of love. Highlights of the exhibition include: • Showing of “Valentine for Perfect Strangers” (2006), a video work by New York artist Ben Coonley previously screened as part of Greater New York (2010) at MOMA PS1 • An interactive new media work by Melbourne artists Zoe Scoglio and Cait Foran in the form of a rock which can read the attraction level between participants • A new animation by established Brazillian performance artist Marco Paulo Rolla • An interactive music box by Melbourne artist Danae Valenza • A video installation exploring celebrity obsession by Melbourne artist Sue Dodd Exhibition runs until 10 March
