About The Artwork

My father died 25 years ago. I miss him. I don't handle death. Two years ago he came into my dreams- he was alive all of a sudden and it was Christmas. I had gifts for everyone but him-I didn't expect him to show up. He was dead all these years. So I was trying to explain myself and he just sat in this chair, as if he was in a parallel universe, not complaining, not resenting me, just watching us have our Christmas. Later, my therapist told me it's as if he wants me to let go. He isn't here anymore and I get to create my own traditions around Christmas, and stop trying to recreate my childhood with my father so painfully missing from it.

I am Ivana Vidovic, from Split, Croatia. I studied philosophy, sociology, marketing and sales, but I always painted. I grew up with paintings on the walls, since my great-grandfather was Emanuel Vidovic, famous Croatian modernist painter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emanuel_Vidovi%C4%87 He and my grandfather after him, collected paintings so instead of the posters that most teenagers looked at, I looked at our paintings: Job, Dulčić, Pulitika, Stančić, Vidović... My father and I shared the love for Gauguin, Van Gogh, Chagall, Toulouse Lautrec, Cezanne... We would go through little books we had of so many artists and he would teach me about different styles and the artists' lives. I decided as a young woman to not study arts, influenced by Kafka, a writer who didn't want to study literature. I love the innocence of a layman speaking through the art. The lack of skill and the authenticity of the emotion have always been appealing to me. For some years now I create digital art on my smartphone using an app called ibisPaintX. And sometimes I combine drawing on paper with digital art. The motifs that you will see in my paintings are philosophical. What interests me is the meaning of life, or the lack of it, loneliness vs solitude, good vs evil, and so on. There is a lot of pain and suffering turned into beauty and hope. I suffer from trigeminal neuralgia, a very painful condition that tests my resilience, and I find comfort in painting. Sometimes the process itself means more than the product. Hopefully the product has its value too. Thank you for visiting my profile.
