Cornell (Cy) McGowan was born and raised in Brooklyn, NYC - a place known to be tough as it is beautifully enriched by culture and creativity. As a child, Cy took illustration and ceramics course at Pratt Institute which was pivotal in his development and helped to curate his vision as an artist. Mediums include pencil, charcoal, oil and acrylic and the work is considered “Visual Hip Hop”. Cornell is inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Ernie Barnes, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Warhol. In addition, by various creative friends, graffiti, and of course music (Soul, Rhythm&Blues, Disco, Rock ’n Roll and all elements of Hip Hop). His work embraces struggle from true to life experience with a promise of joy. He strives for originality and soul to be infused into each piece with every stroke.
