About The Artwork

Unique abstract painting by Laurie McClure. From art critic John Crowther, "Laurie McClure's Untitled is a deceptive work. McClure's tonal restraint is belied by her allover and beautifully wild applications of paint. At first glance (or at least to my untrained eye), Untitled appears entirely and uncompromisingly abstract. However, as one continues to gaze, it becomes clear that the painting is at least as figurative as abstract (if not more so). One can easily become lost in the veritable whirlwind of gesture, thick impasto, and scions of acrylic intersected by uncompromising pastel and charcoal passages. So easily, in fact, that one can initially fail to notice that the entire painting is composed of faces of animals, monsters, and people. From Abstract Expressionism to Bosch in a matter of seconds, the canvas is transformed into a hellish mass of tangled limbs and faces consuming each other in a Dante-like frenzy."

Laurie McClure is an artist living in Washington state. Born on April 8th, 1990, in Longview, WA, and currently resides in Toledo, WA. Laurie's been developing her distinctive approach to visual art with her education in color theory and aesthetics and a past career in professional makeup artistry. Laurie's current artwork is a medley of heartfelt watercolor portraits, conceptual paintings that often merge beauty and nature, and painted illustrations of expressive characters. Artist Statement I find myself inspired by day-to-day living: the people and animals I love in times of joy and grief. When the viewer sees my art, my intentions are for them to feel these sentiments that I put into my craft; the complexities of life and humanism make the characters shown in my work unique. The meaning of my artwork isn't always direct but rather a mixture of thoughts & concepts coupled together.
