View of Manana Island from Waimanalo Beach, Oahu, Hawaii. Manana means "buoyant" or "stretched out" in the Hawaiian language. The island is also known as "Rabbit Island," in English, due to a population of rabbits that had been introduced to the island by a plantation owner during the 1880s. The rabbits were eradicated during the 1970s due to the environmental destruction they were causing. Today Manana is a seabird sanctuary, and landing on the island is off-limits without a permit. Rob Kajiwara is a native Ryukyuan / Hawaiian.
