Young Carlos Santana black and white portrait. Santana is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1966 by Mexican-American guitarist and songwriter Carlos Santana. The band has gone through several line-ups for recording and performing throughout its history, with Carlos Santana being the only constant member.
