we seem, in our Scottish garden, to have collected agapanthus plants with flowers that range from almost black, through various shades of blue, to pure white. Here, slightly digitised, are some of them. We don't cut them, but I thought they would look good in stoneware bottles, and backed by other blue and white things. So, there's an antique brocade fabric, and blue and white 'ashet' (which is a Scottish term for a carving/serving dish). Using the computer allowed me to mellow the fabric and ceramic so that they didn't dominate the flowers. Needing something for contrast, many years ago some young visitor to the garden had left behind a toy Citroen 2CV. Lemon yellow, we'd once owned the real thing. The tiny model seemed just right, an almost forgotten memory, so there it is. The past, and, as we get more agapanthus plants each year, the future too. A3. Edition of 50, signed and numbered. Without the watermarks.

David Stuart, long fascinated by the beauty and complexity of the plant world, has painted and drawn them on and off since childhood. Born in London, he now lives partly in the Scottish Borders, or in Edinburgh. Still collecting plants, he uses paint, drypoint, silk screen and digital methods to portray the splendours of the plant world. Most of his images are derived from his own garden. He would love to be able to draw like Durer, simplifiy as stylishly as Ellsworth Kelly, be as sumptuous as Matisse, and as rigorous as Ruskin.
