About The Artwork

Playing around with the colour wheel I wanted to achieve a minimalist uplifting Pop Art image. Bringing a strikingly contemporary approach to the long tradition of geometric abstraction, Peter Monaghan’s work is defined by its mesmerising impact and fine attention to detail. A consummate creator of both paintings and mixed media pieces, Monaghan has realised a distinct visual aesthetic that sets his work apart from the crowd, while also raising intelligent questions about the nature of looking and the construction of appearance. Typified by a bold use of colour and recurring patterns of geometric shape and form, Monaghan’s creations are notable first and foremost for their attention grabbing effect. The viewer is immediately struck by the visual power of the work, drawn in by strong statements that catch the eye and then kept transfixed by the underlying detail and complexity. Driven by the inherent sculptural quality of the work, a sensation of movement is evoked by the intersection of channels and pathways, as well as the utilisation of contrasting planes of perspective and structure. The effect is such that the viewer is able to twist the picture this way and that in their mind’s eye, to float over or through the image, to hold it in their hands, or walk within the landscape of otherworldly forms. While the appearance of the work is uniquely his own, Monaghan’s practice also offers a rewarding art historical dialogue. His paintings continue a tradition that goes back to the earliest geometric abstract artists, such as Kasimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian. Like these early pioneers, one of the most interesting qualities of Monaghan’s work is the juxtaposition between the perfect universality of the geometric forms that make up the work, and the particular, hand-drawn manner in which they are executed. While the former suggests a mathematical realm detached from our own, the latter adds an organic, spontaneous touch, placing the work within our grasp. In a world of of digital production - and reproduction - Monaghan is determined to maintain a craftsman-like, handmade approach, striving to achieve perfection, yet comfortable in the knowledge that his work will always retain the mark of the artist. Moving forwards from earlier influences such as De Stijl, Cubism and Constructivism, the artistic movement to which Monaghan’s work is most closely associated is Op Art. Developed by the likes of the leading Hungarian artist Victor Vasarely, with whose work Monaghan’s strongly resonates, Op Art has been notably championed in the UK by the acclaimed painter Bridget Riley. Adhering to the technical dexterity and visual richness of this wider movement, Monaghan adds his own, contemporary flavour, balancing complexity with a joyous sense of fun. Above all else, a feeling of positivity pervades Monaghan’s creations and it is perhaps this power of affirmation that explains why we are so attracted to his work.
