About The Artwork

Part of my Artists Go Ape series, Frida Kahlo is another artist who life, style and subject matter has been a huge influence on my own work. The original conte drawing on cardboard sold quickly after I finished it to a private collector in Australia, who loved the way anthropmorphic art (portraying humans as apes) brought a new dimension to the public image of Frida. The original has attracted Comments like 'the eyes are so sad and wistful' and 'it makes her look as vulnerable as I always imagined she must have been'. Other people, who knew nothing about Frida Kahlo but loved the image, kept asking me about her story, so I decided to have some fun with the image and tell a bit of her story through digital graffiti. So look hard enough and you will see references to things that famously shaped her art: pain, politics, Diego Rivera, Mexican folk art.

I am a post punk pop artist working predominantly in conte and charcoal on paper or cardboard as well as playing around endlessly with my images on my ipad using Sketchbook Pro. Occasionally I stray into painting and ceramics and am about to embark on learning screen printing and woodcuts. I live in the bayside village of Mornington, Australia with my husband, cats and multiple visiting lorikeets. My son has qualified as a doctor, so has finally left home, leaving me free to invest in my artwork at last. I work out of a converted factory space called Artspace8, which I share with graphic designers, painters, a ceramicist and a textile designer.
