About The Artwork

Initially, I put a title of "Some Like It Hot" on this digital work, as both a nod to the famous golden-era movie AND to the fact that this is a somewhat abstract representation of three strings of dried jalapeño peppers hanging in an open-air market near Ensenada, Mexico. But that work began as a possible background for a memorial portrait of an old conga-playing friend from my years in Austin, Texas. Arturo (Turo) Lomas Garza was, at the same time, one of the toughest guys and the sweetest souls you're likely to run across -- much of the former resulting from a two-year stint in State Prison, and the latter even more remarkable that he retained such a personality after doing hard time. (If you're not aware of what getting caught by the County Sheriff in 1970s South Texas with a couple of joints in your pocket could get you ... count yourself *blissfully* ignorant.) Turo passed away unexpectedly in the spring of 2016, only having reached his mid-sixties. I suspect that the "rhythm of Heaven" is now just a little bit livelier. Well .. I went another direction with the background for the portrait. But it seemed *necessary* somehow to rename this piece "Picante del Turo". Requiem en Pace, compadre _____ Like Turo, the edges of this work are left "rough" -- which is to say authentic and with little concern for any arbitrary confinement imposed by usual conventions. Your print will show this ragged edge, and this should be considered when anticipating matting or framing. If you choose a canvas, we suggest a white wrap for a bit of a "bought it straight off the artist's easel" look.

Will Barger is ... a veritable fountain of sage thought, and the occasional pretty picture. Born at an early age in a small town in Texas, Will grew up at the center of everything in the middle of nowhere. Folks seem to agree that he chose his parents exceedingly well. Will has covered quite a bit of ground since then: From the fjords of southern Chile to the arctic plain of Alaska; from the Great Wall outside Beijing to the Eiffel Tower in Paris; and maybe most importantly, the Texas Chili Parlor on Lavaca Street in Austin. Will has greeted Presidents and kings, billionaires and bums -- and sometimes has been hard pressed to tell one from the other where it counts (particularly where politicians are concerned). He's run *to* the rescue, and he's run *from* the Federales. He's been shot at more than once, and never hit (yet). He's made more than his fair share of money, and he's lost more than many make in a lifetime. Will's main goal in life is to be shot dead at the age of 85+ -- by a jealous husband, in his thirties. He's kissed a girl or two along the way, and one that really mattered. Yep, Will's life has been a lot of things. But mostly, it ain't been dull. Some of that hopefully shows up in his work.
