About The Artwork

A still life, digitally painted with iPad(Procreate). Limited editions are printed by myself, and come with my signature. *** There is a bar in Ikseondong, Seoul. The place is a remodeled hanok. Dimly lit, there lies what used to be the base of a long-gone pillar, right after the entrance. It always made me stumble. One day I visited the bar to find out the base was now covered with glass box. I no longer had to trip over it since. It was my now-fiancé who first brought me there. "Every single time I bring a girl here, it never fails," he said. I scoffed at him then. Seems like he was right, after all. We drank whiskey together. I could sharply sense the peculiar smell of Laphroaig, as the candlelight was hardly bright. Now, the bar does not sell whiskey anymore. With more customers coming, it has lost its previous air, tranquil and sexy. It is still dimly lit, but not the same any longer. We had to get used to it, drinking martinis. Now the place has become a good spot for martinis; not a good spot to hit on girls. Thanks to the change, my fiancé cannot meet new girls there anymore. I am happy about it. This work represents my inner self, accustomed yet confused. Just as it takes some time to get used to it when the light goes dark, I hope you will get used to this work with low brightness saturation.

Hi, I am Okbi. I was born and raised in Korea. Okbi is my artist name, by the way. I don't like my real name as it's a bit common in Korea. As common as Becky in the English speaking world, I guess.I majored in fine art and usually paint with my iPad. The big reason being that Korea is kind of small, and the rent is high. So I tend to work with my iPad since I lack the place to store lots of materials. Until last year, I was obsessed with so-called contemporary art, critical toward discriminations against those marginalized in Korean society. Then I met people who worked on such art while not knowing a reason why Sewol Ferry disaster happened; and also those who didn't even know why the South Korean president was impeached. I became doubtful, and these days I tend to focus on works that are more personal. I wouldn't bring out my personal "dark past," however. I had enough chance to work with my past in college. Furthermore, I believe art should be beautiful, not dark.
