About The Artwork

2017's 3rd Place Arizona State Winner for the Native American Month Juried competition, Waneta is a New Media, Abstract Impressionistic Quad triptych Painting. Dye Sublimation Print on Aluminum. Ink and Acrylic Glazing hand embellished, Resin Seal. In this painting a monochromatic palette has been chosen for the purpose of mood and structure. The Mark Making with slashing undefined lines intensifies the overall Tribal feel of the painting. Many pieces in my portfolio consist of these paintings that are after a sort, Rorschach-esque styling, revealing deeper complexities through the algorithm. Analogous of our Transitive Live Anthropological Society of the Americas. Visually speaking to the totem, the bird man, the metamorphosis of Native Man to Animal, that I was seeing in the painting, I was seeking an appropriate title, yet I did not want to make use of the cliche' terms "Skin Walker", "Wendigo", "Shape Shifter", or "Shaman" where so many stories are based in myth. None of them tasted right on my tongue, yet all of them seem to embody a sense of the word I wanted to portray. The title also needed to be of Souix Origins, which is when I used a name generator and found Waneta which direct translation means Shape Shifter. I'm sure you can find the humor in that.. *Waneta the name Itself holds a historic placement as a Famous Yanktonai Dakota (Souix) chief., he signed the first Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1825. *His Namesake - Two United States Navy ships have been named USS Wahneta and one has been named USS Waneta in honor of Waneta. To read more about Chief Waneta check out Wikipedia. *Wikipedia I have no clue how to grasp the concept of revealing a past moment in time with a future painting made in my present regarding information I have no previous knowledge of, but there it is. Original One of One, Waneta Dye Sublimation on Aluminum with the Ink and Acrylic Glazes. Signed and Numbered accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Fulfillment 2 - 4 weeks. Limited Editions 1 - 25 are available on Canvas and Archival Art Papers. Numbered and Signed Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Each Sub-strait is it's own Edition No1-25 and size. ARTIST || PHOTOGRAPHER || DESIGNER A homeland and world traveler. A self taught Creative. Observing, exploring, connecting to the sensory intimacies of sound, vibration, light, shadow, texture, scents, flavors, color. ~The Color Purple “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it" ~Alice Walker The first time I found my fingers in paint was at the young age of three. My teacher staring down at me, hands on her hips. "What are you doing?" she sternly asked, seemingly bent over, her nose to mine, as I sat on the floor fingers sunk in. She obviously didn't understand or appreciate my painting. I had swirled all of the colors into a tornado of grey brown paint, which is exactly what my response was. "It's a tornado!" I replied. ~Off she walked without further notice of me. And so it began, the painting, the sketching, the practicing of writing fonts, the designing of houses, the picking up of cameras. ~I was eight when I first shot a Kodak. Then under the steps of my home, in my very own darkroom built by my father, when I was fourteen. I don't remember a time when I wasn't busy painting, drawing, shooting, developing. Developing my eye, my taste, my need to dream and create. ~I loose myself in these things, and in music, and in my children, and in their children, and in my tribe, and in myself.
