About The Artwork

ф.н. Vladimir Yakobchuk is loyal to paper. While he loves painting in oils using experimental techniques, he is constantly drawn to watercolors. The large format of the work headlining this exhibition proves the power and scale that this painting technique can acquire in the hands of a master. An exhibition exclusively of watercolours is rare in European art, rather more typical of the Asian tradition, which explores the different possibilities offered by paper and watercolors, going way beyond the works of the salon. The Beaufort scale, which measures the strength of the wind from dead calm to hurricane, defines 15 metres per second as "strong wind", when the waves of the sea pile up, the ridges are broken, tree trunks bend, large branches sway and it is difficult to walk against the wind. It is not just autumn picture of falling leaves, but a kind of allegory of paths in art, the challenges of ways of life and natural losses. Where leaves torn from trees lay on a coloured field there is now just a white gaping void... Artem Magalashvili, art critic, candidate of philological Sciences. English version Craig Brandist, Professor of Cultural Theory and Intellectual History, Director of the Bakhtin Centre, Russian and Slavonic Studies, School of Languages and Cultures, University of Sheffield.
