About The Artwork

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, UV protection, oil, metallic pigments, fabrics, and pigment prints (collage) on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. Words are few. Here, in homage to Marshall McLuhan »The Medium is the Message«, words and images are crafted (a weather chart by the Ritz) to create an experiential synthesis of the city of Paris. In a society, which favours the written word for the dissemination of ideas, the visual is easily misconstrued as mere decoration. But the interaction of text and image elements, the painting’s juxtapositions of paint and prints are evincing an ambiguity or generating possibilities. The obligation is thinking beyond the canvas into the world of actions. Essentially the work emerges from the physical process of painting (oils, metallic pigments like gold and copper), painting over, wiping out, juxtaposing the construction of a picture with the destruction of its materials.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld was born in Tokyo, Japan and grew up in Hong Kong and Hamburg (Germany). He studied fine arts at Parsons School of Design, NYC and currently lives between Berlin and Munich. He has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions and art fairs, including Art Fair Cologne, Art Karlsruhe (both Germany), Art Bodensee (Austria) and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), Sotheby's (Vienna), Chloe Savigny (Paris), Fiona Alison (London), and 46 Parachute Purple (New York). Having a studio in Berlin, he was filmed there by the ZDF television channel for a Robert Mapplethorpe feature. His work can be found in corporate collections throughout Germany as well as in private collections worldwide.
