1975 Born in Hualien County, Taiwan
Chang-Ling's world of flesh
-Flesh, Source, Smile
Chang-Ling was born in Hualien City in 1975. During his childhood he was greatly influenced by his father Yang Wei-Chung and was educated in close contact with the arts. He began his first exhibition at the Hualien Cultural Center (a joint exhibition of Yang Wei-Chung and Yang Chang-Ling) in 1996. In the same year he was admitted to the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Bourges and then got the D.N.A.P (BAC+3) degree in 2000. And he entered Ecole Nationale Superieure Beaux-Art de Paris in the very year, studied under Christian Boltanski, Jean-Luc Vilmouth and Jean-Marc Bustamante, then got the D.N.S.A.P (BAC+5) degree in 2004. During his sojourn in France Chang-Ling became interested in the difference between social systems and structures in the east and the west and he engaged in artistic creations from the angle of art. His art works such as Political Flowering, I Love Nature Chicken and Upper Class Practicing Device, etc show his interpretation of serious social issues with unique humor.
Since 2001 Chang-Ling has held exhibitions in Europe and America and won first prizes at MontrougeYouth Artists Salon in photography and images in France. Chang-Ling has traveled in Spain, Portugal, Venice, New York, Paris and other countries and has become acutely aware of the misunderstandings, blending and sublimation between the different nationalities and the many emotions simmering in the crevices between the layers upon layers of space and time. He feels the inadequacies of relationships between people, families, nations, and cultures. In his creation, The Cheering Girls, he uses a single frequency video recording to show encouragement of fragile social structures with a split second appearance of spicy girls wearing long bright red cross motif skirts in rapid but discreet tempos.
Chang-Ling says: "I do not criticize but split my sides with laughter at the wild currents of this era." In another installation action creation, "Links," he describes local dominance in a silent and ceremonial presentation; the audience starts with caution towards interactive contacts. His creations merge into arts from different angles and engage in in-depth discussion of traditional burdens or the development of artistic phenomenon from bizarre elements.
Art is not solely for releasing our desires and "flesh" is the pronoun Chang-ling uses for art.
