About The Artwork

A consistent theme throughout my work over decades has been the exploration and juxtaposition of opposites: thick/thin, full/empty, loose gesture/tight control, complimentary colors. I am also drawn to minimalist designs and expressions, even as, at other moments, I revel in dynamic complexity. Many of these elements exist in the Jardin du Luxembourg, so this series allows me a broad range of explorations. This particular piece highlights several of those elements: the play of gesture against tight control, and an expression of minimalism. Standing at the basin looking south, you see the wide spaces of the lawns and gravel pathways juxtaposed against the rigid structure of the allées, expressions of gesture versus control, and empty versus full. In these ways, this piece serves as a delightful metaphor for the perennial contradictions and resolutions in our lives.

American expat living in Paris. Registered landscape architect in another life who maintains a passion for all things architecture / landscape architecture / urbanism - related. I've been creating art and exhibiting for more than 40 years. Moved to Paris 2+ years ago to study those parks associated with a moment of violence in history, where today there is little, if any evidence of that violence -- the parks are typically places of beauty and recreation. That, too me, is a fascinating dichotomy. So far I have about 50 sites that fall into that category, and i'm sure I will find more with additional research. So the project is to catalog the sites; document, through verbal and visual histories how they have developed; document through my own photography how they are being used today, and then to create new interpretive artworks, blog entries, etc. It's a fascinating journey, and I invite you to come along!! In addition to the originals for sale here on SaatchiArt.com, you'll find my blog at www.marcolsen.net.
