About The Artwork

The painting was planned as a continuation of the “Old photographs” series (where the artist gives a second life to old photographs in is paintings), but this time Zakhar came up with an idea of very unusual portrait. A portrait of a person, but without such person on it, maybe just a slight trace or a shadow to hint the anticipated presence. Consequently, we may see a typical background for an eastern European countryside house that takes us back in time some 30 – 40 years, but its empty, there is no life there. The artwork was completed a day before the russian aggression against Ukraine, which gives it additional deep symbolism. An empty house, empty sofa… Where are those people? What happened to them? Will they return? Are they alive? The artwork will be shipped carefully and safely rolled in a durable plastic tube because of its large size. Rolled artworks can easily be re-stretched.

Art, to me, is a profound exploration of the world that surrounds us - a journey of discovery, experience, and self-understanding. It is a medium through which I unravel the essence of things - their colors, forms, and the interplay between them. I believe in the power of simplicity, in the art of removing the excess and uncovering the necessary, much like a sculptor chisels away at stone. In my paintings, I strive to distill forms to their purest essence, reaching a point where nothing else can be removed without sacrificing meaning. The "necessary" elements, as I perceive them, remain, serving as conduits for my impressions and self-reflections on the subject at hand. My aim is not to depict something specific but rather to transfer the emotions and thoughts evoked by the object onto the canvas. I seek artistic forms that can boldly and vividly capture the essence of these feelings, rather than mere visual representation. In this pursuit, my work often exists on the precipice between figurative and abstract art - place where emotions take precedence over strict visual interpretation. Through my art, I invite viewers to embark on their own contemplative journeys, to interpret the subtleties and engage with the interplay of emotions and forms. Each brushstroke carries the weight of my perceptions, inviting you to join me in this exploration of the human experience. zakhar@klossart.com
