"A Certain Chemical Imbalance in Purple Green and Gold" is a 24" x 36" artwork on custom wood panel with oil, ink transfer, gold leaf, enamel and art resin. There are themes in this series of work referencing art history, wealth, luxury and mortality and I am attempting to aestheticize certain imperfections: morbidity and destruction next to growth and regeneration, rampant consumerism contrasted with historic events, conflicts between control and unpredictability, disassembling and re-appropriating the systems that surround us, technological chaos versus human balance — or vice versa. This repurposing and deliberate corruption of materials through art history painting and historic events speaks directly to our collective memory loss. And just as this visual corruption speaks to our memory loss, incorporating luxury brand logos represents our very personal effort to represent ourselves as perfect in an imperfect world. I chose this medium and the subject matter as a way to express what I see as a world coming apart, obsessed by power, corruption, luxury, wealth and technology.

Taylor Smith focuses on blending social awareness with science, mathematics, contemporary oil painting and artistic disciplines including silkscreen printing and analog film photography. Within her work, Smith seeks to combine abstraction and figuration with elements of science, traditional still life and portraiture. To accomplish this, she not only uses a wide variety of materials and mediums including reclaimed silkscreen frames, discarded analog technology, luxury brands and commercial packaging, but she also incorporates mathematics, organic chemistry, mechanics and photography into her work. Smith also works with 8mm film and other analog film mediums to blend the practice of filmmaking and painting. Her recent work explores the relationship between pop culture, luxury brands, political upheaval and crisis. Taylor's intention is to blend painting with elements of technology, film, chemistry and mechanics to create an unexpected and transformative experience.
