ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I got to see David Byrne’s American Utopia show on Broadway in October 2019. That show was so profoundly wonderful for me at a moment that a really needed it. It was awesome to spend several days working on this painting, listening to the live record (available on iTunes and I’m sure elsewhere) and remembering all of the goodness that’s come into my life from the show. Here’s the story: the primary colors for the show are grey & sunshiney yellow so I pulled those two colors in. But when you watch the show, it feels like there’s a lot more color, and it’s partly because you’ve got so many faces and feet (the performers in the show are barefoot), so the natural tones in this piece are about that awesome skin rainbow. The hot pink and blue line? That’s about the killer eyeshadow & kapow lipstick I remember Chris Giarmo, Tendayi Kuumba and Jacquelene Acevedo wearing. (Jacquelene kindly called this piece “Spot on!”) DETAILS: - Acrylic on 8 inch by 10 inch (8” x 10” x 1 5/8”) birch wood panel Ready to hang, no hardware required. - Work is signed and dated on the back. - Free shipping and handling for US customers. (International customers, please email for shipping price.) Artwork ships (well-protected!) within 5-7 business days after I receive your order.

I’m Jess, an artist living and working in Portland, Oregon. My work is about the way that beautiful images can disrupt and change our habitual ways of thinking and looking — and ultimately change us. My work is very intuitive. It’s informed and inspired by color sensation, minimalism, and experiential “light and space” art movements. I work on each image until I feel everything click into place: that feeling of “rightness” tells me the work is done. I work in series — like chapters in a book or verses in a song. Each one feels like it’s part of a whole that’s always growing and surprising me. My hope is that each piece serves as an invitation, a portal, a totem: a way of getting more deeply attuned to who you are and who you can become. I create my work digitally on a touchscreen with my fingers. The digital techniques I've been developing for a few years are a hybrid of painting, screenprinting and collage. I then print the images using pigment ink on thick,100% cotton fine art paper. Each of my prints is an original work, not a reproduction. The completed prints are completely archival. I’m proud to say my work is up on the walls of collectors in New York, L.A., London, Paris and everywhere in between. Hope you enjoy your time here — and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or just want to connect!
