VIEW IN MY ROOM
United Kingdom
Painting, Acrylic on Wood
Size: 18 W x 24 H x 2 D in
Description: The Charles Dickens Museum is in the house in which the writer once lived in Doughty Street, London WC1. One wet day I was taking photographs for reference, my camera pointed at puddles on the pavement. A pair of feet appeared in the viewfinder. I waited patiently for them to pass by. They didn't. They stopped and a voice asked: 'Jim Kelso, what on earth are you doing?' It was the son of a friend. It would have taken too long to explain. He probably still thinks I'm odd. The original painting sold later that summer from the Alexander Gallery. A limited edition print of this image, price 75 unframed, is available at: www.kelsopaintings.com

Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
