When Rowena discovered the art of machine embroidery, her art work took on a new dimension. She now lives in a material world, layers of fabrics are placed down and transformed under the guidance of her sewing machine needle, the tiniest piece of fibre can take on significance and bring a piece of work to life. Music plays a part in her art as she moves her fabric under the needle to the rhythm of her music of choice.
She interprets work influenced by various artists into stitch, maybe the Bauhaus artist Paul Klee or Wassily Kandinsky, even Sir Ralph Hotere has been rendered in stitch, starting off her works on “An Exploitation of the Humble Cross Stitch”. Most recently she has ‘taken on’ the screen prints of Andy Warhol, a riot of colour and stylised flowers.
Once you see Rowena’s art works your immediate reaction is to look closer, how is it painted? How is it made? You want to touch it, to feel the texture, although the work has simplicity about it, a further inspection shows a depth of fibres, fabrics and stitch. Meaning that you will see differing elements each time you view the original artwork.
