About The Artwork

I situated the easel and canvas in the house's backyard and painted the house and the surroundings almost plein air. I started last winter and was soon discouraged by the bare branches and withered bushes around. This March and April leaves were climbing up the trees and lily leaves emerged out of soil after weeks of rains. I reconceptualized the composition and painted again. For two or three weeks, I spent mornings capturing the tonal changes of the green plants and the white house. The sun climbed up quickly, so I took a photo or two of the house to continue in the studio. I then put aside the painting for days, waiting for my excitement to recede while beginning to work on another project. As I slowly gained new perspective, I took the canvas out in the yard to complete it. I'm very pleased when I added the shadows of the big silver maple and beech trees in the far front.

Painting and drawing help me understand myself, express myself, and communicate my understanding of the world. I make paintings that reconcile opposites and capture the divine, the poetic, and the joyful. I enjoy mixing my own colors, and I am interested in how the amount of light on a color affects the composition, structure, atmosphere, shape, and other colors in the painting. I enjoy coloring my painting surface with fields of shapes, patterns, and rhythms. I paint as a journal, documenting my experiences in life, so my work has changed over the years. I believe in the communicative capabilities of color and pattern, rhythms, atmosphere, empty space, and the endless plasticity of the medium. Inspired by modernism and Asian aesthetic traditions and informed by travel, photographs, and memory, my work tells a story or conveys a distinctive sense of spiritual pursuits.
