This painting is the first of a series of works about skin, and it has an anti-rascist message. This is written on the surface in a form of code, which looks like hieroglyphics but is in fact a form of English script. The writing refers to where we are now, and where I came from, placing me in a historical context; it describes when my psychological and political views were formed and asks us to consider how we progress from here. The figures on the background are different skin colours - white, brown, black and yellow. They are all holding hands; in this age of polarisation, I believe we would do well to remember that we are in this world together and should just get along. Philip Roth's 'The Human Stain' is a novel about race and identity, and how we present ourselves to our peers and even those most intimately connected with us. I used this as the starting point for the text and also the painting. A transcript of the writing is available should customers wish to read it. Note: the varnish used to protect the painting left fine bubbles over the surface which can be seen close up. This was a happy accident, as it works with the theme of skin: they appear like fine hair follicles on the surface.

United Kingdom
I am an Australian Interior Designer and painter living in London UK. I believe we are put on this planet to look after each other, including strangers. I make art to have a conversation with people I will never meet, to find a connection between our experiences that reflects our common humanity. I live in an age when the earth faces an existential, environmental and humanitarian crisis through climate change, and art is the way I represent my time and place, to respond emotionally and convey the urgency of the need to become carbon neutral.
