About The Artwork

oil and acrylic paint on canvas (in painted, wooden, tacked-on frame) An oil really is a collector’s item in the context of Darukhanawala’s output. He works principally on paper with acrylics and watercolour. This work encapsulates to absolutely non-contradictory central aspects of Darukhanawala’s work: first, a search for truth by stripping away myths and deceptions and second, a quiet, unsentimental life affirmation in everything from the colours, shapes and textures of his work to the way the work has been executed. Darukhanawala has never been afraid to engage with the world critically, but the respect for life in all its wonderful creative possibilities is equally important. The boat shapes – and they are shapes rather than boats (a nod to Roger Hilton) – have a mystical presence. The action within the hull-form looks, feels confused – a bundle of emotions – but this bundle of emotions is also a beautiful, positive, vibvrant life-affirmative energy. The SOS to which the title alludes is classic Darukhanawala: the very source of pain and sorrow (‘love can mend your life but love can break your heart’) that is the outcome of critical engagement with oneself and the world is also an inherent trigger for a better life (‘hope’) that art doesn’t so much bring as ‘shows’ as a possibility: the bundles of emotions can, in the final analysis, be regarded as calm ships in stormy waters around them – no contradiction there necessarily. This is an exciting work of art … if you’re willing to look inside it and yourself and feel it and your own emotions. Dimensions above include frame (unframed: 250 x 250 mm.)

‘My pictures are songs: explosions of energy, meaning and communication. They are spurs for communication with the self and others.’ (Persi Darukhanawala) Persi Darukhanawala’s minimal pictures explore the uncertainty (and so, de facto, excitement) of life (ars longa, vita brevis). With multivalent richness, Darukhanawala’s painting-songs somehow communicate endless, elusive psychologies rather than reproducing already-known visuals. Like the vibrant songs with which they have polylogues, the paintings are life-embracing, positive but equally critical and the product of a spirit in revolt (‘l’homme révolté’). Darukhanawala has attracted sustained interest from academics, critics, individual collectors as well as design houses and hotels. He was shortlisted for the prestigious Art Olympia 2017 in Tokyo, Japan.
