Painting: Acrylic on Canvas.
It's hard to forget the racial turmoil in Melbourne when I studied there in the '90s.
On one side of the road, people were picketing and their signs read "Asians, go home!" One of them shook an angry fist in my face.
So I crossed the road to the other side and some people wrote with chalk on the ground, "Asians we love you, stay here!"
Yet a couple of streets later, the signs read, "Asians go home!"
That night I went to the best hot dog stand and while waiting in line, heard a huge roaring noise behind me.
My instinct was to just duck. Three young white men threw rotten eggs and because us Asian students all ducked, the eggs hit the hot dog seller in the face. I offered him my handkerchief.
The hot dog was delicious as I watched the euphoric picketing downstairs, outside my window.
