Unconscious gestures are refined with a slower more conscious consecration, which prevents their dynamic complexity becoming mere mush. His lines, though sometimes wild, have an intellectual rigour and prudence that goes beyond automatism or mere luck. He does not rely upon lazy exchangeability of ciphers, where everything can symbolise everything. Rather his organic multiplicity of line, embraces the fact that perception is divided by different senses, and that nothing can be perceived in totality or fully mastered. Furthermore, Cummins non-linear mark making has something of the character of dreams, where the normal sense of time is lost and sharp boundaries dissolve.
