About The Artwork

This is a picture of an abandoned vegetable cart which was near the guesthouse where i was staying in Rishikesh in India. I was keen to paint the interplay of light and shadow on the spokes. It seemed impossibly difficult and intricate in the beginning but soon became a challenge..a bit like untangling a knotted ball of string. I found this cart quite poignant somehow. I will never know what was sold on it or why it was abandoned. It just remains forgotten in a corner of rural India, gathering dust and mud. I painted this with ink, pencil and gouache on paper whilst in India and then carried on working once home using oils after mounting it on a board and isolating the water based materials with an acrylic medium.
