One of my absolute favorite painting of all time is the famous "Tondo Doni" by Michelangelo Buonarroti. It is a round painting exposed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and I had the privilege to see it many times. It's incredibly modern and its round shape frames perfectly the three subjects (The Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and Child Jesus) in a composition which has a dynamic force that goes beyond the surface of the board. That is why the round shape of the board I think works perfectly. On the contrary a square or rectangular frame tends to give a sense of finitude and limitation inside the boundaries of the pictorial surface. The imagination is confined so to speak. Basically I am an abstract painter and of course I can not compete with Michelangelo but I was fascinated with the idea of a round board which gives me this sense of outward projection of the energy which arises from the colors.
