About The Artwork
This work was originally made as part of an installation in which the lines in all the paintings could be imagined to connect up around the room. The paint is airbrushed onto cotton tape which is then fixed to the canvas with the coloured side facing away from the viewer. The tapes are raised slightly so that the colour reflects off the surface. The lines represent thoughts and emotions, hidden from view but their presence registering. They can also represent the way colour travels, so that the medium - reflected colour - is also the subject. This work is a finalist in the Fisher's Ghost Prize 2021 and will be available for sale during the exhibition. Info: c-a-c.com.au

Chris lives and works in Sydney, where he attended the National Art School. At one point when he was there, he re-introduced the discarded masking tape back into a hard-edge work. Later on he replaced masking tape with cotton haberdasher's tape, little expecting that this would become the core of his practice. His method is usually to gesso lengths of tape and then apply acrylic using an airbrush. Sometimes he leaves the gesso bare and works just with shadows and the play of light.
