Ijeoma Ogwuegbu - Artist Statement As a 46-year-old writer who transitioned to art three years ago due to developing Fibromyalgia, my work comes from an urgent need to create. Working primarily on canvas, I use acrylic paint to create studies in detailed motion, colourful floral expression, and explorations in uli art—an ancient form originally exclusive to women in my Igbo tribe in Eastern Nigeria. Growing up surrounded by these marks during festivals, passed down by women like my mother, and as a feminist woman, I find privilege in using this medium to tell stories of women's creative minds from the past and express my own, to seal these stories in our time. Creating uli art is a connection to Ala, the goddess of the Earth, and with much of the knowledge lost to colonial pressures, I feel an urgency to preserve and keep these marks alive for the future. Developing fibromyalgia, a paralysing chronic pain condition at 43 years old felt like the sun fell out of my sky. After 20 years working as a journalist, poet and script writer, learning to create again through art gave me a chance to rebuild. Often my paintings are accompanied by words or poetry, as I find further room for connections in my work. With the condition slowly stealing memories, I triumph over its theft by continuing to paint. My art calls for pause, a moment to take in the details and experience colour and the joy it brings.

Nigeria
I'm a writer and artist living in Lagos, Nigeria. I paint to fill the spaces between what we know and what we can only imagine. As a person living with a chronic condition (Fibromyalgia), painting is a release and a necessity, at the same time an obstacle to navigate in the spaces my body becomes present in. I'm fascinated by patterns and the way they fit into our everyday lives and the essence they imbue into life. I love the energies that colours and paint carry, and how our bodies receive and internalize such, both good and bad. To speak to the things my body can do, and expand what it can't. As a woman and a feminist, I love to explore how everything around us have been used as a cloak, in wrapping women in processes that are harmful to us, just to prop up a system built to subdue and destroy us. I want to keep pushing those spaces and their effects on us and everything around us.
