About The Artwork

Nina’s figurative women are perfectly imperfect. She paints her female figures with slightly contorted features, subtly and beautifully. Her modern women gracefully demand authority by remaining silent. Take the time and look into their eyes, and you can feel their spirit and all they have endured. Stark hues in their surroundings seem to move as if radiating energy. Bold colors, light, and dark contrasts create a motion in the ever-changing environments of these women. Nina creates her paintings from constructs of memory. The women she paints are icons of women in her surroundings and as a part of herself, often depicting a combination of several women in one figure. Nina insists on not explaining their stories entirely, but all of these women have one to tell. Nina wants to provoke feelings in the viewer that is their own, a mirror reflection of the viewers positions in contemporary culture. Nina addresses the social issues of body dysmorphia with her subtle contortion of the female figures yet making her subjects radiant and beautiful. They are all at the moment, becoming aware of their situations and who they are, the moment of contemplation and transformation. “A woman who becomes fully aware of her confines is a mesmerizing creature that scares society at large.”

Nina van Alphen is a Dutch artist based in New York. Born in the Netherlands, she attended the prestigious Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1994. After her art education, she decided to “paint from life” and started exploring the world. She traveled through Europe and the United States, supporting herself by selling her artworks to private collectors. She settled in New York in 2001 and continued to paint. Nina’s art explores what makes people who they are, their stories, their true face, and their guarded hidden side. The artworks studies and reflects the integral parts of society and the complexity of the human soul. Nina explores how art can function as a mode for understanding our relationship to the world. “Nina’s artworks are narrative poems of live.” " I am not an activist, but I do like to make people’s mind wander. Without wander we are lost.” Her art is modern figurative, showing both constraint and tension in a dance of sharp lines and shadows, that represent movement and vibration with the subject burning to be exposed. www.ninavanalphen.com
