Sometimes I like getting into the meticulous detail of a piece. Like all of the lettering on the back wall in this one. These torn posters were symbolic of how communication can break down in our modern world. There's a lot of symbolism in this painting. Narrative paintings are some of my favorites. The way the two subjects have their backs turned to us says a lot. It can mean many things. People often ask me what things mean in my paintings and I can't always answer them. What it may mean to me when I paint it isn't always what it means a year later, or ten years later. It's all right if it means something different to the viewer than it means to me. I like it when it does because I believe these narratives, in part at least, come from our subconscious so it's not possible for us as creators to completely know the entire story. I've had it happen more than once where a collector has helped me put pieces together of my paintings.

The first thing people tend to remember about me as a child is that I was always drawing. Even in elementary school I always had my sketchbook. My first love was always traditional painting. I had a book about the Old Masters I copied from when I wasn't copying Star Wars characters from magazines. I received a BFA in figure drawing and graphic design with a minor in art history from Eastern Michigan University in 1987. I worked for 15 years as an art director and graphic designer. I painted and drew in my free time. In 2000, I began freelancing to find more time to paint, and by 2004, I quit advertising to paint full-time. In addition to my studio practice, I teach painting in my Sarasota FL studio.
