Painting water is my passion - for me, it invokes a meditative feeling, a sense of escapism. This piece has been inspired by the concept of 'no man's land' - the state of in between, of ambiguity. My aim was to invite the viewer into this territory between borders, unoccupied and uninhabited by man. For me the sea is something indefinite, neither one thing nor the other – a never-ending expanse that is also a kind of void. The sea is a place where the in between is constant - it is a suspended mass in between territories, somewhere that is ‘removed’, both of something and from something. Removed from inhabited lands and from the relevance of time. It is a place of irrelevance. With this painting, I invite the viewer to get lost in the depths of the waters, and the in between of states - the movement and weather above the surface, and the calmness and quiet of the water below. I invite them to momentarily dismiss their physical location and to forget time.

Emily is a British artist living in Barcelona, Spain. In 2021 she was shortlisted for the 19th edition of the l'Alcora-Ximén d'Urrea Young Painter's Prize in Spain. Emily grew up in Winchester, Hampshire and has spent a lot of time over the years in the French countryside and on the island of Menorca. She has since lived in London, Sydney, and Barcelona, where she is currently based. Emily is greatly influenced by the relaxed outdoor lifestyle of warmer climes, drawing inspiration largely from coastal locations but also rural landscapes, for the beauty in natural life and form, and the warmth of the continental light. It is the subtleties of this light that she endeavours to capture with her painting. She is hugely inspired by Joaquín Sorolla, Ken Howard and Claude Monet. Emily has spent periods studying under mentors Maria Rose, Piotr Perski and Ricardo Llopico. She began her painting career with watercolours but her preferred medium is oils, painting en plein air whenever she can – for the excitement of the speed and technique used, calling for simplification to convey only what is needed. Emily’s work was exhibited in the Mall Galleries 2023 Art for Youth exhibition. Her paintings are part of the ongoing collections at Bell Fine Art, Winchester, and Blue Frame Gallery, Barcelona; whilst her Giclée prints are part of the collections at Nadia Waterfield Fine Art; Gallery 5, Salcombe; and Yarmouth Gallery, Isle of Wight. Emily is a Friend of the ROI.
