About The Artwork
Alan has lived on the streets for over 30 years. Originally from London he came to Portsmouth around seven years ago. Alan often hangs around the beach and historic Hotwalls Studios in Old Portsmouth where Rudziak’s studio is based. The portrait is one of three paintings that were completed as part of post lockdown project. Rudziak has developed a relationship with Alan over the years and is developing a project based on the mental health of rough sleeping.

I am a figurative painter based in Portsmouth, UK with a focus on portraiture. Over the past five years I have teamed up with Portsmouth City Council and Arts Council England for my project We Don’t Need Culture, creating works of Portsmouth residents in an attempt to encapsulate the community and cultural environment of the city. My work resides in private and public hands, as part of Portsmouth city art collection and the Royal Navy, it has been exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Scotland, the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and is featured in the book 500 portraits: BP Portrait Award by Sandy Nairn.
