About The Artwork

Alluvion means overflow or flood. I have intertwined water images within a wild nest of memories. The central spine is surrounded by the invertebrate jellyfish. Images of Florida and England and my travels on sailboats are delicately excavated from the flow of the flood. I challenge you to experience each image in a flow of transitions. I drew the spine from observing a medical model. Water is the "central nervous system" of my life. All images radiate from the spine. The underpainting composition is created when watercolor pigments individually react to the water flow. I draw into the composition with homemade gesso in a ruling pen. From this abstraction I introduce the images and their transitions. Watercolor and graphite are natural mediums for me. This painting is floated off the surface in a shadow box frame. The deckled edges of the paper are exposed. It is meant to be experienced as a specimen, an object whose story is yours for the interpretation.

Artists Statement...I create puzzles. A jigsaw player knows never to force a piece that doesn’t quite fit. Sometimes you have to examine a piece another way to register the connection. Each piece looks completely different taken out of context.... My drawings and paintings compare unrelated elements. These comparisons challenge the way we perceive our surroundings and each other. The FAÇeADE project attempts to form connections between people based on common human experience. Each portrait and story fit together to illustrate our unique community.... Painting and drawing from life are my discipline and passion. I teach students to see and develop their personal voice. My degree in illustration taught me to tell a story. Studying with painting masters taught me to create illusions.... BIO...Elizabeth Reed never thought she would live in Florida. After sailing from Chicago to the Keys in 1979, she only imagined living in South Florida on a sailboat. Her eyes opened wide when she returned. Her suburban home sits on limestone surrounded by wildlife (the animal type.) The natural surroundings fascinated her, but accepting the diverse community took more time.... Elizabeth draws and paints about the interaction between nature and humans. She considers the elements in her work as unique pieces of a puzzle. She introduces a fresh perspective by rearranging the pieces of nature and community.
