About The Artwork

Aluminum Tray My husband’s family is originally from north eastern Massachusetts. For a number of years his brother would rent a house on Plum Island (no relation) facing the Merrimack River. It had been in the owner’s family for a couple of generations and had sweeping views of the river and of the salt marshes. The sun came in at all angles through out the day. There were a number of semi-vintage items around the house. The aluminum tray seemed like it was someone’s shop project from the 1950’s. It was charming and a little rustic. There were a number of McCoy bowls in use around the kitchen. I took a medium bowl and placed it on the tray. The sun hit it at just the right angle and inspired me to paint it. The work is 18” x 24” The frame is a black wooden floater frame. The frame measures 19 3/8” x 25 3/8” x 2”

“The still lifes focus on intimate scenes from daily life, while the Film Noir & Western works evoke imagery inspired by the American films of that genre. “Initially I decided to focus on small intimate moments from my own life at home and while traveling, noticing when sunlight hit items in an interesting way.” “Painting is a creative outlet for me when I’m not acting. It gives me a feeling of control over my creative life. An actor often has to wait for projects to come along, but I can paint any time of the day. I sometimes describe my art as ‘spontaneous still life’. Whenever I see a likely subject, everything stops and I take photographs. This holds the moment in time until I can paint it.” “When working from the photos I don't necessarily want to re-create it exactly, but look to reimagine it. I do this it by adding color, and working with the light source to represent a mood or capture a feeling.” Unless otherwise noted, the compositions are oils on canvas or linen and range in size from 5” x 8” to 30” x 40”.
