Inspired by characters in dialogue in film noir, figurative forms emerge out of abstraction. The textured surface for painting on is created out of words - ripped up handwriting collaged on heavy paper. The writing could be film notes or poetry - its original meaning is melded into the image. As always in my art, colour matters. The painting is mounted on a wooden panel.

United Kingdom
Based on the Scottish island of Bute, I was previously professor of applied linguistics at the University of Leeds and the Open University. Years of research into the dynamics of metaphor and empathy in dialogue accompany me into the studio. My work has been exhibited in galleries in Berlin, London, Leeds and Tighnabruaich, and was shortlisted for the National Open Art competition in 2015. On leaving my university professorship to work as a professional artist, I was invited to take up a fellowship and artist residency at Cinepoetics, Freie Universität, Berlin, and was based there from October 2015 to September 2017.
