About The Artwork
This painting is based on the work of Anna Coleman Ladd who used her sculpting skills to build prosthetic facial masks for WW1 veterans disfigured by the war. I superimposed a model draped in plastic to emphasize the surrealistic feeling of the masks on the wall. I want viewers to feel layers of history and layers of meaning. I also feel like the transparent plastic shows how clothing reveals the body but obscures it also, and how that echoes the nature of the self and its relation to the body.
