About The Artwork

The human spirit is truly remarkable. It is a powerful, independent being capable of self determination, yet is constantly at conflict with itself, drawn between rationality and impulse. It is a paradox, capable of the most tender love, yet also the most depraved evils. In this piece, expert craftsman Nicholas Chan navigates the power of the human spirit. Warm hues of love and joy are contrasted with blue melancholic shades of emptiness and sorrow. Tones of simmering rage are juxtaposed with the reassurance of peace. Excitement is contrasted with tranquility, ecstasy with despair. Antagonistic colours overlap, threatening to spill over at any moment as if to conquer the other, mirroring the unrelenting Jekyll and Hyde like battle that takes place within each human being. A few solid, interruptive lines convey the mind's subtle attempts to retain control, yet are fruitless against the raw explosiveness of pure emotion. Meanwhile, the brain buckles under the pressure, fractures appearing through spots of blackness dotted throughout the image, reflecting the fragility of the human mind. Chan explores the human condition in vivid detail, showcasing the struggle between sanity and insanity in one of his boldest works yet.
