And Then She is The Darkness Painting

This piece was inspired by those lovely moments I have spent walking alone in a city on a rainy day. The major cities I have lived in include Seattle, Philadelphia and Melbourne and the mood I tried to capture here is one of the peaceful anonymity and wonder of exploring a metropolitan area as a young woman out on her own. I grew up in a rural area in a very red state where it is largely discouraged for women to explore their immediate world, let alone to explore independently. So when I did leave home and move to my first big city, (Philadelphia) as I explored the areas sights, sounds and smells, I was always acutely aware that I was doing something forbidden and delicious in the simple act of being a woman alone, out and about town. In a small rural town, everyone knows your name and probably knows your business too. Despite the fresh country air, the familiarity, at times, can become suffocating. There is a certain freedom and peacefulness that the anonymity of a city brings. There is a freedom to be and to become. I hope that the viewer is able to pick up on the sense of peaceful satisfaction and sublime joy of a young woman standing in her own power and exploring the world around her.
