My art explores both the micro and the macro, from human interaction to bio- and eco-logical systems to the physical, spiritual and mental forces that shape our reality. Each work is born at the intersection texture, viscosity, gravity and the sub-conscious mind. When I paint I'm performing a jazz solo. Texture forms the foundation, the "comping" for the other players in this trio. Works are always created flat, often using fluid flow and gravity. The rhythm section fleshes out the overall composition, while I pull creative inspiration from wherever it originates. Soon it's time to wrap it up and cut to the final sequence of visual notes. The final form may not appear until late in the process, or even after completion when there is more time to reflect on what has been created. That, of course, is where your mind comes into play too...for your interpretation -- through your experience and your vision -- is the ultimate stage in the creation process. Bruce Meberg was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Bergen County, NJ. He started studying oil painting and piano at age six. In college he studied engineering design, psychology, higher math, properties of materials, and creative writing. His first job was designing communication satellites for GE. When he moved to New York City in 2012, Bruce took up serious study of jazz. Then he migrated to abstract painting under Raul-Saantiago Sebaszco, a highly accomplished abstract and figurative artist based in Chelsea. Since then he has created more than 70 works of art and exhibited dozens in shows and in galleries and public spaces throughout New York City's boroughs and New Jersey. The New York jazz culture has influenced the way he composes a painting: often these are works of pure improvisation. Bruce studied jazz at both the New York Jazz Workshop and the New York Jazz Academy. Being willing to plunge ahead and take a chance -- and able to recover from an unexpected happenstance -- are skills he learned as a jazz pianist and improviser. He often listens to John Coltrane, Miles Davis or Dr. Lonnie Smith when painting, letting the rhythm and intensity infuse his art. Of course New York City has an incredibly vibrant contemporary art scene with hundreds of galleries and major annual art shows and Bruce is dedicated to keeping his finger on the pulse of the very latest, and the greatest, artists in the field in his quest to produce great art.
