About The Artwork

This work is part of a wider project, in which different female figure of ancient mythology are depicted (see Dido, Medea, Diana and Clytie). Ariadne is a highly interesting figure of Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Minos, King of Crete, and his queen Pasiphaë. The terrible Minotaur was her half-brother. Her father put her in charge of the labyrinth where sacrifices to the Minotaur were made. One day, however, Theseus arrived in Crete to kill the half-man half-bull monster, and she fell in love with the handsome young man. She decided to betray her family, to help Theseus kill her half-brother and to run away with him. She is a contradictory figure and, for this reason, an interesting subject for an art work. My work describes Ariadne’s last night in Crete. She is depicted in an almost abstract space, and is half hiding behind a wall. In her left hand there is her most known symbol, the ball of thread. She is going to give it to Theseus, so that he could find his way out of the labyrinth. She is still an innocent girl, who is going to lose her innocence. Love has filled her heart, and now her feelings are confused. There are fear and curiosity, shyness and desire, reluctance and audacity in her sight. She seems to look in our eyes. However, the more we get close to her, the more we notice that she looks beyond us. In fact, her dreamy eyes look towards her future with Theseus, far away from her homeland. And maybe a smile is blossoming on her lips. Even if Ariadne is going to betray her people, there is still a sense of freshness around her. The green background recalls her youth. The drawing conveys a sense of lightness. To add a contrast, some parts are painted with gold enamel. At the same time, the green background gives depth to this work on wood. Framed with wood batons – no additional framing required. Ready to hang.

Transformation, light and the mixing of old techniques with new materials play a leading role in my recent production. The main link between my works is a quest for harmony, an attempt to describe the inner – and sometimes hidden – elegance of trivial matters. Ethereal female figures inspired by ancient Myths, flowers, fruits, peacocks and other pieces of reality are depicted in my bright figurative style that recalls the great tradition of European painting, especially the analytic approach in describing reality that was typical of both Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelites. My strokes are normally clean and the images neat, however I sometimes focus on a specific part of a painting, especially when an unexpected element - such as a Plexiglas layer - is inserted into the composition. In this way, the incredible potentiality of oil painting flourishes through the clear lines of a feature, in opposition to the blurriness of another one. My quest towards the soul of things pushes me often toward portraiture, this wonderful game of mirrors where the individuality of the artist merges into the inner self of the model.
