About The Artwork

Ask Sobek, 2022 Oil on Canvas 180H x 150W x 4cm Crocodiles or crocodile-like creatures have filled the niche of semi aquatic ambush predators for aeons; manifesting in the fables and art from the dawn of civilization. Crocodiles are an archetypical danger from deep within our collective unconscious; haunting the nightmares of our distant ancestors. Sobek was an ancient Egyptian deity who initially appeared in Shedet (known to the Greek’s as Krokodilopolis) in 5200BC. Revered and feared, Sobek was a prehistoric apex predator with an enormous appetite. Some say, He emerged alone from the primordial dark waters of chaos, called forth the land, laid eggs upon the bank and brought order to the universe. In ancient Shedet, Crocodiles were venerated as Gods. The sons of Sobek lived in temples and were adorned with gold and gems. Fed beer, wine and the finest meat, they grew to enormous sizes. And were mummified and buried as God kings. It is said that Sobek created the Nile from his sweat and rules over it. This hungry, virile God, invented the fishing net and with his animalistic sex drive floods the Nile to bring abundant harvests and new life. One of his epithets is ‘Neb Meto, the Lord of Semen, capable of taking women from their husbands according to his desires.’ Fiercley protective of his family, Sobek was known to act purely and instinctively, without hesitation. His omnipotent sons were considered to be judge jury and executioner. **This Painting is Artist quality Oil paint on 12oz cotton duck canvas, stretched with traditional glue size over a pine stretcher bar.
