ABOUT THE ARTWORK

A painting illustrating the phenomena of Atavistic recall. Atavistic Memories depicts a male human figure in the throes of recalling the tracks of his heritage back to the dawn of time. In displaying numerous characteristics from these epochs, he evokes the behavior and mannerisms of each in the present. The phenomenon is juxtaposition with shamanism, psychedelic experiences, creative dreaming and transformational psychology. First shown at Doorways to the Underworld exhibition, Stevens Square Center for the Arts, October 25th 2014 For related information see Dream Language Atavism is the tendency to revert to ancestral type. In biology, an atavism is an evolutionary throwback, such as traits reappearing which had disappeared generations before. Atavisms can occur in several ways. One way is when genes for previously existing phenotypical features are preserved in DNA, and these become expressed through a mutation that either knock out the overriding genes for the new traits or make the old traits override the new one. A number of traits can vary as a result of shortening of the fetal development of a trait (neoteny) or by prolongation of the same. In such a case, a shift in the time a trait is allowed to develop before it is fixed can bring forth an ancestral phenotype. In the social sciences, atavism is a cultural tendency—for example, people in the modern era reverting to the ways of thinking and acting of a former time. The word atavism is derived from the Latin atavus. An atavus is a great-great-great-grandfather or, more generally, an ancestor.

Roger Williamson is a visual artist, residing and creating in Minneapolis Minnesota. Born in Loughborough, England, in 1947 and growing up in Coventry he was inspired from an early age by the French Symbolist painters of late nineteenth century France, These artistic influences, in conjunction with his own esoteric upbringing and practical experiences of magick, mythology and dream control, form the matrix, a collective oeuvre upon which his paintings and writings are an extension. Using diverse creative media, whether painting or writing books, Williamson endeavors to develop techniques that materialize the sensuous dreaming experience into the language of the waking world. Aspiring to reintroduce mystery and ambiguity back into the adventure of human existence through the creative process, encouraging artistic audiences towards "living effulgent and invigorating lives, revitalized from the secretions of our subconscious." Roger Williamson is the creator of Tarot of the Morning Star deck and the author of The Sun at Night. Statement Art is an externalization of the struggle to rationalize and give form to the unknown. Like an oyster driven to create a pearl, the artist channels this internal conflict into a tangible image. I believe that art should be appreciated through personal engagement, allowing the work to speak for itself without being clouded by societal or academic paradigms. This concept parallels techniques first acquired in childhood, such as staring at clouds and seeing recognizable images emerge from the perceived chaos. By allowing a work to resonate with a deeper part of the self, beyond the superficial mind, the viewer becomes a part of the creative process. Through their imagination, the artwork evolves to another level, making it dynamic and in constant flux, much like nature itself. In this way, art transcends mere visual representation and becomes an active dialogue between the viewer and the artifact. It invites an individual interaction that fosters a unique experience every time, underscoring the fluid and transformative essence of art.
