About The Artwork

This summarises my thoughts on this painting: The gateway illustrates the rise of the magnificent balinese culture, art and architecture to subjugate the surrounding jungle which has spawned and fed its creation and magnificence. This civilisation in turn becomes overtaken and swallowed by the encroaching forest after passing its peak, as its former glory is absorbed back into the jungle’s verdant splendour, the inherent diversity of nature which the culture failed to love and respect enough. It’s a metaphor for our civilisations’ fated interelationship with mother earth and our inevitable rise and ultimate decline. The way the living world has organically fueled our subliminal magical rise and bloom on the back of its vegetative condensed power which has blossomed and spoiled, rotted and suffocated us, leading to an unstoppable but ultimately natural decline. The luscious forest that spawned and fed the sublime giant has ultimately choked, starved and taken it back into its verdant heart; this image documents that transition in its intricate splendour; illustrating the connections between nature and the inexorable rise and fall of man within it.

My art is about place and identity, inspired by travel and experiences of locations around the world and the people who live there. My impression of the sense of place is the starting point; I try to capture the enticing idyllic atmosphere of faraway places, the colours, textures and character of the scene before me. I am enraptured by travel, and have lived in six different countries during my lifetime - I have taught and painted during these wonderful experiences around the world. My love of languages and different linguistic scripts is the starting point for my abstract works; and although they have a freedom of direction (as all abstract work must do), motifs and languages (mostly ancient) are the point of reference and substance for these creative investigations. Now I am based in Liverpool, England, my home city. In some of my work I have represented the different aspects of this intruiging city, the make up and temperament of the things I see every day. I hope you enjoy viewing the work as much as I have enjoyed creating it.
