have a strong interest in the visual aesthetics of written language, especially Chinese characters and writing systems. The evolution of Chinese characters, or morphemes, is roughly like this: before the invention of Chinese morphemes, primitive humans recorded language with different methods of knotting ropes; engraving pictures in bone, wood, shells, and jade; and drawing and painting pictures to assist in note-taking. As humans transitioned from nomadic to agrarian societies, they began to use characteristic graphics to simplify and replace knotted ropes and pictures. As literacy increased and written communication and record-keeping became more important, graphic symbols were simplified and codified to create the morphemes that comprise written Chinese. In short, Chinese characters are simplifications of graphics. Now, I use in my art these "simplified graphics" to recompose images. In my paintings, Chinese characters are used as dots or lines. In this painting, I used texture effects to create the feeling of waves. Then I wrote each grain of fine sand with small Chinese characters for sand: “沙". In both painting and nature, the color of each grain of sand can be slightly different. Every Chinese character for "sand" gathers and disperses to form rhythmic dots and surfaces. This is my beach. I would imagine shells, footprints of shore birds, and the hairs that people shed as they lay in the sand, and I laughed when I thought of these details. As I write, I revel in the joy of the beach of my imagination. If you can read Chinese characters, reading this beach is like reading a poem. Even if you cannot read Chinese characters, the hieroglyphic nature of Chinese characters and the way they are incorporated into the texture of the image will give you many interesting details to enjoy. In this way, Chinese characters come from images, and I try to make them return to images.
